If you live in an apartment in Charlotte, NC there are several area Memorial Day events taking place in our area. Here are a few ways you can celebrate our nation’s heroes.
Forest Lawn Cemetery salute to veterans
American Legion Post 53 will host its annual Memorial Day program from 2-4 p.m. Sunday. It will include an advance of colors, reading of the roll of honor, a gun salute by Southeast Guliford High School’s JROTC and more. The event will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 4601 Freedom Drive.
Patriot Festival Go The Extra Mile 5K
SouthPark’s Symphony Park will host its annual 5K Race Monday. Participants can register for the traditional 5K or for the Go The Extra Mile race, which has an additional mile to honor veterans. An awards ceremony and festival follow the races. The park is at 4400 Sharon Road.
Huntersville Memorial Day Celebration
Birkdale Village will hold its annual Memorial Day celebration that starts at 7 p.m. Monday. The celebration will include performances by Central Piedmont Community College’s Chorus, a flag-folding ceremony by North Mecklenburg High School’s Junior ROTC, and more. Joseph Reale, senior commander for American Legion Post 321, will speak as the honored guest.
Gaston County Veterans Council event
Gaston Memorial Park will host their annual Memorial Day program, presented by the Gaston County Veterans Council at 10 a.m. Monday. It will include a performance by the Gaston Symphonic Band with ice cream for all veterans and their families at 1200 S. New Hope Road, and an open house at the American Military Museum located at 109 W. Second Ave.
Lake Park Memorial Day Ceremony
Lake Park in Union County will host its second annual Memorial Day ceremony 11 a.m. to noon Monday at Veterans Pond, 3708 Faith Church Road. Jason Braase of the Wounded Warrior Project will be this year’s keynote speaker. A presentation of colors will be performed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2423 Color Guard.
Kannapolis Parade of Veterans
The Parade of Veterans will kick off Kannapolis’ Memorial Day ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Monday, beginning at the corner of Laureate Way and Main Street, ending at Veterans Park. The event is hosted by the Beaver-Pittman American Legion Post 115. Norris Dearmon of the Kannapolis Historical Committee will be the guest speaker.
