Why Should YOU Move to Charlotte, NC?

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, September 20, 2017

Auston Woods, Charlotte, NCHere’s what a rich variety of Charlotte residents would likely share with you:

Relocating families might tell you that they love the growing job market, low cost of living and four-season climate, or the range of neighborhoods from urban to rural, good public and private schools and universities.

Members of Charlotte’s burgeoning creative class may tell you that they love the funky in-town neighborhoods like No-Da, live music venues like the Music Factory, Neighborhood Theater and the Double Door, our proximity to mountains and beaches and access to all types of amazing outdoor activities.

Retirees might mention our abundant churches, the highly-respected health care system, Charlotte’s many museums and cultural opportunities, as well as one of the nation’s best airports so their grandchildren can come for a visit.

Business owners would probably mention Charlotte’s well-educated, productive workforce, the resilient, diversified economy, good transportation system, and our active Chamber of Commerce that helps integrate businesses into the Charlotte business scene.

These are all great reasons to be sure. But most love Charlotte for its people. The area was first settled by forward-thinking, hard-working and welcoming folk of Scots-Irish and German extraction. Moral and highly independent people with a charitable bent shaped this town and region. Their fingerprints remain on our collective souls.

Should You Downsize in Retirement?

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, September 14, 2017

Auston Woods, Charlotte, NCOne method for freeing home equity for other uses is to downsize your home as a part of moving. Downsizing could mean either moving to a smaller home, or moving into a similar-sized home in a less expensive community.

The arithmetic is fairly basic. If you’ve paid off your mortgage and live in a $300,000 home, and then sell it and move into a $200,000 home, then $100,000 of your home equity has been freed for other uses.

Another possibility is simply to sell your home and then rent an apartment in Charlotte, NC. Renting frees up home equity and provides more optionality and flexibility to make more frequent moves before settling down.

When analyzing the decision to rent or buy, you’ll need to consider factors such as the loss of build-up in home equity and its subsequent growth (or loss) and savings on property taxes and other types of home maintenance.

As a part of downsizing, you could consider moving to an apartment community which may be less expensive because of the amenities offered and provide organized activities and social support.
